Celebrating 30 Years of Funny Girls: Blackpool’s Drag Show Icon

Funny Girls, the iconic drag show, is celebrating its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of entertaining audiences with its unique wit and colourful performances.

Since opening its doors in 1994, Funny Girls has become a staple of Blackpool’s entertainment scene, known for its lively shows and welcoming atmosphere.

The journey began in a corner bar venue on Queen Street, founded by Basil Newby MBE. The popularity of Funny Girls quickly grew, leading to its move in 2002 to the former Grade II listed Odeon building on Dickson Road. This historic building, with its stunning Art Deco features, has provided a perfect backdrop for the glamorous and high-energy performances that Funny Girls is renowned for.

Over the years, Funny Girls has captivated hundreds of thousands of audience members. One of the highlights of its illustrious history includes a performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Royal Variety Performance. The show’s combination of comedy, dance and dazzling costumes continues to draw crowds and create memorable experiences for all who attend.

As Funny Girls celebrates this milestone, Blackpool BIDs extends its support and congratulations to the entire team.

To commemorate the occasion, Funny Girls is hosting a special 30 years show, which is being celebrated on social media with the hashtag #funnygirls30. Fans and newcomers alike are encouraged to join the celebrations, whether by attending a show or sharing their favourite Funny Girls memories online.

Here’s to another 30 years of laughter, glamour and unforgettable performances. Happy birthday, Funny Girls!
